CPD Scheme Guidance

Engagement, Support and Community

This section of our site is designed to summarise the CPD scheme requirements and link to resources you may find useful.

Breadth of Practice and the 4 OPS themes

Reflect the breadth of your practice and link with the four Osteopathic Standards themes:

  • Communication and Patient Partnership
  • Knowledge, Skills and Performance
  • Safety and Quality
  • Professionalism

Objective Activity

Include at least one objective activity over the 3 years that informs your practice and quality of care.

This could be:

  • Peer observation
  • Patient feedback
  • Clinical audit
  • Case based discussion

Demonstrate that CPD benefits patients and include at least 3 hours of CPD activity based around communication and consent over the 3 year cycle.

Keep a record

Maintain a record of your CPD activities.

The new CPD scheme comprises a three-year cycle of 90 hours of continuing professional development.

At least 45 hours of CPD learning with others (retaining the current requirement of 30 hours of CPD each year and a minimum of 15 hours learning with others).   There may be some flexibility within the years to say do 20 hours one year and 40 the next to catch up.  There will be a self- declaration at the end of each year when you re-register to say how much CPD you have done. You will receive feedback at this point as to what you need to do over the coming year. Therefore there is definitely not the option to leave all your CPD to the final year!

Breadth of Practice and the 4 OPS Themes

The 90-hour CPD cycle remains primarily self-directed, but must include activities related to the 4 OPS themes mentioned above.

CPD does not have to be matched to the individual standards, only the over-arching themes. CPD also does not need to be equally spread across the themes as long as each theme has been covered at some point in the 3 years.

CPD should also support all areas of osteopathic practice

  • clinical practice
  • education
  • research
  • management

These activities should be in proportion to your practice life so if you work at a college 2 days a week, 40% of your CPD should be in the field of education and 60% relevant to your clinical work.

Completion of these activities helps ensure that the osteopath reviews their practice, the Osteopathic Practice Standards, and undertakes appropriate CPD. This will enable the osteopath to demonstrate CPD Standard1.

Objective Activity

At least one objective activity must be undertaken. This might include:

  • patient feedback-for resources click here
  • peer observation or feedback (involving two or more people.) For resources click here
  • clinical audit-for resources click here
  • case based discussion (involving two or more people.) For resources click here

The objective activity should be recorded to include:

  • the aim of the activity
  • a note of the method used
  • the data or feedback gathered
  • how the data has fed into CPD and practice (this will usually include analysis, reflection and an action plan of how you will implement changes in your practice as a direct result of the feedback received.) This is a key element of this standard and will have to be demonstrated in your Peer Review at the end of your CPD cycle.
  • CPD-Reflection-form

Undertaking an objective activity helps ensure that the osteopath is undertaking appropriate CPD based on feedback from another source about their practice – thus supporting safer and more effective practice.

Completion of these activities will enable the osteopath to demonstrate CPD standard 2.

CPD must be undertaken in communication and consent.

There are a range of resources to enable the osteopath to undertake this CPD either through

  • self-study
  • a course
  • e-learning
  • group discussion

The guideline is 3-4 hours over 3 years.

We know that communication and consent are potentially areas where patient satisfaction can be low and complaints can be high.

Requiring CPD in this area for all osteopaths provides guidance about risk for practitioners. It also meets both public and osteopathic expectations about incorporating higher areas of risk into any scheme assuring continuing fitness to practise.

Completion of CPD in this domain will enable the osteopath to demonstrate CPD standard 3.

Keep a Record

Your CPD Portfolio must contain your planning, description of CPD activities, your reflection on these activities, and the relevance to your own practice. It can be paper or electronic. It will form the basis for discussion at your Peer Discussion Review.

The Peer Discussion Review is a structured interview with a peer, it can be undertaken towards the end of your three year cycle:

  • under the auspices of a regional group
  • with an educational institution or Osteopathic Alliance ( advanced practice or special interest) group
  • with another osteopath or health care professional

The current thinking is that you identify a peer early in your cycle so that you can build a relationship with them of mutual support and learning.

Your portfolio is designed to allow you to demonstrate that you have covered all aspects of the scheme.

Discussion of the CPD folder as part of the Peer Discussion Review will enable the osteopath to meet CPD Standard 4.

peer-discussion-review-guidance this guidance gives details about the PDR and also a template that can be used to guide a PDR discussion.

Not all 90 hours of your CPD must be linked back to the OPS (Osteopathic Practice Standards) as long as you have covered all 4 themes in some of your CPD. This leaves you some flexibility if you really wanted to attend a particular course to do so even if it does not cover one of the themes. It is suggested though that the vast majority of CPD will cover at least one of the themes.
